Edo Castle park field trip

Edo%20castle%20foundation.jpg
Today the international students braved wind and rain to visit the Imperial Palace's East Garden where the huge foundation for Edo Castle still remains. Recently the students have finished several lessons on the early history of how the capital was founded by Tokugawa Ieyasu, so seeing some of the very places they have studied was a treat.

Although there is only a broad field in front of the where the castle tower stood inside the inner most walls, we found a map detailing how this area used to be covered in low castle buildings.

Not 5 minutes away is a stone marker signifying the initial location of the 47 Ronin incident.

Here everyone is inside a second layer of walls beside the original samurai guard's buildings. The gardens are definitely worthseeing, and we'll be planning a tour to see other gardens in the near future.

Early this month, the international students visited the Sumo Museum in Ryogoku, Tokyo. The museum is located beside the Ryogoku Sumo Arena, it's free to get in and it contains displays of prominent wrestlers, plus tournament videos.

Behind the Ryogoku Arena is the Edo-Tokyo Museum, and we had a wonderful guided tour by Harriot, who treated us to many tales of the history of Edo, especially Tokugawa Ieyasu.
