JET teacher Laurence's May 2017 Blog Post!

This month, we received a massive shipment of new books for our Extensive Reading Program! If you haven’t heard of it yet, Extensive Reading, (or 多読 in Japanese), is a program our school implemented in the last year in a half. Its main goal is to help raise our students’ English skills of course but there are also many other benefits. For instance, reading in another language will expose them to other cultures, increase their vocabulary and maybe spark an interest for reading outside the classroom.

It can be hard for a student who comes into a room full of books written in their second language to choose a book to read. This is why every book we own has a coloured sticker on its side, which indicates its difficulty level. This way, the students can easily choose a book that will suit their reading level and make them feel confident about reading.

We also have all kinds of books and some comics too!

Finally, while some of our books are brand-new, most of them actually come from second-hand bookstores (like Book Off). Despite being second-hand, they still look very good so along with saving money, we are giving these forgotten books a second life too, here at Seiritsu.

The members of the international department have been working very hard to make this project come together and we hope it continues to strive in our school for a long time.

How about you? Have you ever heard of extensive reading before?

See you next month!
