Tankyu Program

Seiritsu started a special program called Tankyu a few years ago. The Ministry of Education also announced recently that they are pushing for similar programs in the future. Once again, Seiritsu is ahead of the typical wave.

Today we are holding talks about the program for interested students and their parents.
I wonder who will be joining the program next year?

National Geographic Presentations

Our school has a strong National Geographic educational component. Combined with several different aspects and areas of education, our students do research about areas such as food, the environment and so much more. They study about it in the social studies classes, in their science classes and even in their English classes.

Almost every fall the junior high students give presentations on what they have been learning. (The high school students often do their presentations in January or February.)
Tomorrow is the big day for the junior high group.

Good luck!

Zoya enjoys sweet potato digging

Hi. Today I went to "imohori" (sweet potato digging), with my class. Since it was my first time to do it, my friends helped me. It was sunny and such nice weather. We were all were so excited when we found big potatoes. Everyone would start clapping when big one was found. We were able to take some of the potatoes home and we were also given some of the rice we harvested a few months ago. Afterwards, everyone was so tired and hungry since it's COVID time, and we weren't allowed to eat anything there even after we finished. But it was so fun and I really loved it.

Thanksgiving time again

Both Japan and the US (and other countries like Canada) have a Thanksgiving Day. Japan's is actually a public holiday "Labor Thanksgiving Day". In the US, it is a public holiday on the 4th Thursday of every November where families get together to eat and appreciate the good things that life has given them. Some of the more well-known foods eaten are turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Yum!

JLPT preparations

Whether you are studying Japanese in Japan or in your home country, you might be taking the JLPT test in December. If that is the case, you are probably looking for more study options.

We wanted to give you all one tip here for most students who are abroad and do not get enough listening practice. With so much available on YouTube these days, there really is no excuse for not getting in more listening practice.

Many Japanese programs have subtitles added naturally. This is a common sight in Japan for Japanese people. But most dramas or movies do not do this. However, we recommend that -as much as possible- you try to add subtitles as well so you can improve your reading speed.

If natural Japanese is too fast, you can slow it down as well on YouTube. Use the settings features to improve your Japanese learning. Good luck!

Measure your Japanese!

Have you signed up the for the JLPT to test your Nihongo skills? The JLPT - Japanese Language Proficiency Test, is the standard for measuring Japanese ability. In Japan the test is given twice a year, and it has 5 levels, in increasing difficulty from N5 to N1, the highest level. Many academic institutions require the JLPT to enter, and some jobs as well (usually expecting an N2 passing score or higher). The due date for this years test has passed in Japan, but you have plenty of time to study for next year's test. Here is their website where you can find more information and test dates for inside and outside Japan:

Studying for Eiken

Some new ALTs (Assistant Language Teachers) visit our blog to learn about the work environment in Japanese schools. This is for those readers...

So many students in Japan have to take the Eiken. It is a "matter of course" that they take the test and use it for various applications. Everyone in Japan knows what the Eiken is.
Here is the main website for Eiken:

https://www.eiken.or.jp/eiken/en/

We often give students lots of tips and advice for taking the test and doing better on it.
For them and the ALTs, it is a good idea to know what kinds of questions are on the various tests.
Each level has its own common pattern. Learn the patterns and you can improve your chances on the test.

Good luck!
