Jessica's Halloween at school!

This month, we hosted Halloween parties for junior high students. It was fun to dress up and prepare for it. We prepared many fun activities such as a Halloween-themed Quizlet, a mystery box game, watching a short movie (Mr. Bean's Halloween), and trick or treating. My favorite activity was the mystery box game because it was fun to see the students get so excited and rowdy. It was especially hilarious to see some students being grossed out by the texture of the items.

Don't Panic!

disaster center.jpegIn early October, the international team made a trip down to Ikebukuro to find out more about what to do in the event of different emergencies.

We started by watching different situations with a VR headset. We learned what the person in the video did wrong and how to react in that situation.

We then had the opportunity to react to a room filling with smoke; we had to find the exit while remaining crouched and it was surprisingly difficult!

Our guide told us about all the different fire extinguishers, and when to use them. We even got to try one out with a virtual fire and pressurised water.

We finished the trip with a simulation of the 2011 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake, which gave a much more real idea of what a serious earthquake would feel like.

Overall, the day was a lot more informative and enjoyable than I would have expected. Our guide around the centre was wonderful and I felt I learnt a lot of really useful information!

I would highly recommend a visit!

Uniform switchover

Nothing marks the change in season like the change in school uniforms. As the cold season is coming, students will start wearing their winter uniforms. People raised in countries or schools that don't require school uniforms may find them strange at first, but they are an essentiual equalizing force that symbolizes a school.

Be Prepared!

For an excursion for international students and teachers we all went to the Ikebukuro Life Safety center. We experienced how real disaster situations such as tsunami, typhoons, earthquakes and fire really feel, and what NOT to do in these situations. We then went to several practice rooms to try out exactly what to do CORRECTLY in these same situations - including: fires in buildings (with safe but real feeling smoke), fire extinguisher practice, and earthquake at home simulation. It was great fun and of course educational!

Train delays

Train delays happen!

In a place where is public transportation plays such a vital role, and in Japan in particular (which is so organized and on time), having delays on the trains can be a major interruption.

As a result, the train companies actually give you little slips of paper to show that the train was delayed and to apologize for the delay.

In major cases - where a train is stopped for a while - there's another piece of paper that is usually used so you can take another train line or other buses to get to your destination.

Students need to present these slips of paper when they get to school to show that the train was delayed. Otherwise their tardiness is recorded on their school report cards.

Next year admissions

We are hoping to accept some part-time international students next year.
We have probably already met our maximum quota for long-term visitors.
However, if you wish to come for a week or two or three weeks, we may be able to still fit you in!
Don't hesitate to send us an email and ask about visiting our school in 2023!

JLPT preparation

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test is being conducted in December. It is an important test for any non-Japanese wishing to attend a school long term or work a professional job in Japan. If you plan to take it, here are some important tips:

Organize your study routine.
Save some time to review what you've learned.
Look up what you need to learn for the JLPT level you are aiming for.
Put off till later the points you do not understand immediately.
Find mock JLPT online.
Be honest with yourself.
Do not focus on only one section.

Good luck!

Term Test Prep

Term Tests are a big part of life in any school, especially in Japan, and Seiritsu is no different. Students spend the afterschool time in special study sessions called Moku Moku to study up for them. There is a countdown leading up to the test week. Then we count the test days too! As the poster says, today is the first day of tests!

Thanksgiving Canadian style

Did you know it is Thanksgiving Day in Canada? Thanksgiving (or in French: Action de grâce) or Thanksgiving Day, is an annual Canadian holiday and harvest festival, held on the second Monday in October, which celebrates the harvest and other blessings of the past year.

Thanksgiving has been officially celebrated as an annual holiday in Canada since November 6, 1879. While the actual Thanksgiving holiday is on a Monday, Canadians gather for a Thanksgiving feast. Foods traditionally served at Thanksgiving include roasted turkey, roast beef, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, sweet corn, various autumn vegetables.
