Under Pressure

I recently enjoyed a drive over to Ryu-Q Kan, or Metropolitan Outer Area Underground Discharge Channel, in Saitama.

Notable for being the largest flood diversion facility in the world, the inside of the pressure-adjusting water tank is a huge expansive space filled with 59 huge pillars that combat the upwards pressure of the water flowing through. It looks like a dystopian cathedral and being able to walk through it was an incredibly unique experience! I learned a lot and was a lot more impressed with this feat of civil engineering than I had thought I would be!

I would highly recommend the trip out to Saitama to see this. It's a very different way to spend a day and gives you a good insight into the work that goes into keeping the surrounding area safe from floods.

Enjoy a trip over the next time there's a rainy day and you're feeling curious!

Common test (formerly Center test)

Last week students all over Japan, aiming for higher education, took the 大学入学共通テスト or Daigaku Nyūshi Kyōtsū Test (known in English as the Common Test for University Admissions) which is an entrance examination recognized by public universities and some private universities. It is a an important event in Japan, in following days, questions from it even appear in newspapers. Hope all who took this exam did well!

Jessica's January so far

In January, I went to Asakusa with my friend to try the strongest matcha ice cream in the world. This ice cream is sold in a small tea shop known as Suzukien.

I ordered a scoop of level 7 matcha (the strongest matcha) and a scoop of black sesame ice cream. I was pleasantly surprised by the taste of the strong matcha. Perhaps I was expecting something so bitter I wouldn't be able to swallow it, but when I tasted it, it has a very rich and creamy flavour which almost reminds me of dark chocolate (a bittersweet taste). Hence, it has a very attractive and alluring flavour. The black sesame on the other hand, has a sweet and nutty taste which offsets the flavour of the bitter green tea. Although the matcha ice cream is delicious, I definitely recommend getting two different flavours of ice cream as too much of one flavour would be too much to handle.

Please do be aware that the interior of the tea shop is not exactly the coziest place as there are limited seating and there are many customers walking in and out of the place. Thus, it's not the idea place to rest and relax.

Overall, I would definitely recommend the strongest matcha ice cream to all matcha lovers out there.
