Jessica checks out the National Garden

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden held a special event at night where you can go see the cherry blossoms under a unique new light. The garden had a completely different vibe to it compared to the daytime. It was mesmerising to see the light show on the cherry blossom trees.

During the event, we were all given a lantern which had a cherry blossom shaped light in it. Since there were many visitors, the lanterns added to the ambiance of the place. It was almost like a fairytale.

My favourite part of the day was the dandelion project where your name can be projected onto the floor. It felt more personal and like an experience unique to me.

Spring has sprung!

While cherry blossom season is now over, at the start of April there were still some varieties blooming at Ukima park. These blossoming trees cast their shadows over flower beds full of multi-coloured tulips which wild bees were darting in and out of. With a picturesque windmill standing by the lakeside, the park had a distinctly Dutch feel to it as though we were in Holland instead of Japan! When I visited, the sun was shining and there was a soft breeze; all in all it was perfect spring weather with people of all ages enjoying picnics on the grass while ducks swam past, eyeing the food hopefully.

The frantic atmosphere of Tokyo can easily sweep you up and keep you busy hopping from one place to the next so the peace of Ukima park, with blooms and sunshine in abundance, was the perfect break. It's awesome that such places exist in Tokyo. Please take the time to relax and enjoy your local park every once in a while!
