Test your Japanese with JLPT

The JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) is a little more than a week from today. Did you sign up? The JLPT is a good way to test your Japanese level and is also useful in the future for studying in Japan at high school level or university level and also looks very good on a resume/CV.
The JLPT has 5 levels, with N1 being the most difficult.
If you didn't sign up this time, start studying and planning to apply because the next test date is Sunday, December 5th. It's never too early to prepare. がんばろう!

Open school days are coming

When you have lived in Japan for a while, and especially when you have kids, you begin to notice certain patterns with advertising. With the coming of summer, you can start to see lots of ads for open schools and open campus sessions. It is the season for students and parents to visit potential schools and get an impression of the school. Where do you want to send your kids? Where do your kids want to go? What do the schools offer?

Well, it is time for us to advertise our annual summer open school event for high school and junior high school. We have open trial sessions for our clubs and some special trial class lessons. The big day for Seiritsu this year is July 31st for the high school and August 1st for the junior high.

If you are looking at your options, we hope you come and check us out.

Fun general activities

We had a chance to go out and plant some flowers by Akabane station today.

We were lucky that the heavy rain held off. But spending an hour outside in the drizzle still made a lot of students wet (and muddy).

This time our class decided to do it with English as well. Brent Sensei went around and interviewed most of the students about the activity and the weather, and taught them some related vocabulary.

We learned many words related to gardening. Do you know what a trowel and a hoe are?

Brent took pictures of the students and we will prepare study cards for our class and for future classes.

You can see the students were having a lot of fun.

Scarlett tells us about her Sports Day

It was great to have the sports festival this year and see so many students having fun together. I enjoyed the new games that were held. My favorite was the ball and hoop game. What part did you enjoy best?

Everybody worked really hard to make sure it was successful. Even in the blistering heat we tried our best and made the most of it. Congrats to the blue team for coming 1st. Here is a picture of our well deserved lunch break.

Well done Seiritsu students and teachers for working so hard.

Vicky makes the most of her last sports day

On June 10th, my school held a sports day (Washimiya Sai) that we could not have last year due to the pandemic. Sports day is one of my favorite school events so I was very happy that we had the chance to do it this year. Although many things were limited and the times were shortened, I had a lot of fun with my friends. The 3rd year girls performed a dance that we had been practicing for about a year. After the performance, younger students came up to me and told me that I did great. That made my day :) Then, I ran in the relay against different colored teams. I was the 6th runner and I passed the yellow team and handed the baton to the 7th runner. My team got 1st place. Right after the relay, there was another relay with school clubs. I ran for the girls soccer club. At first we were in the first place but my teammates dropped the baton and we dropped to 2nd place. I am sure that we could of been in the first place...
I got to take tons of pictures with my friends and teachers. Since it is my 3rd year, this was the last sports day, but I'm glad I made a lot of memories.

Zoya's Sports Day

Hello everyone,
Recently we had the sports festival. I had been waiting for it for so long. I was very excited to play many different games. My friends helped me and we had a lot of fun. We all did our best and worked hard to win. I decided to make a fan (uchiwa) with my friend Suzuka and decorated it with her. We didn't have time to complete it, so she took it home and completed it herself. I really appreciate that she worked so hard. We took a lot of pictures. It was the best day of my life. I can't wait for the next sports festival. たのしみ!

Sports Day Prep

When it starts to get warm and the first term tests are finishing up, all the students and teachers at Seiritsu start thinking and preparing for the summer sports day. Sports Days are an integral annual event for everyone in Japan. Some are held in May and June while others are held in the fall - in September or October.

Children all over Japan, from kindergarten to senior high school, take part in sports days at their schools. Parents and grandparents almost always come and watch and join in the fun for younger students. In junior high and senior high fewer family members come out but there are still quite a few watching on the sidelines. And even if the family members do not attend, there is still some level of involvement and lots of interest. This is all just to say, sports days are a big deal.

We are all excited about being able to hold our sports day event this year. Weather is always a worry but it looks like we should have a nice day tomorrow. Wish us luck!

Wonderful results

As most of you know, our school has lots of amazing students. We have strong sports teams and really talented individuals. We have not been posting all of our results on this blog here but there are always new amazing results. Recently we had some teams and students qualify for major tournaments like the Kanto regionals and the Interhigh. This is a level that all are proud to get to.

But one of our alumni, Hiraiwa Yuna, has reached a very special level. She qualified to represent Japan at the upcoming Olympics. Despite all the challenges related to the event at this point in time, we are all very proud of her amazing achievement. We will be glued to our TV sets and cheering her on from our couches!

Hot tea for hot days

Summer is coming but I still love to drink hot tea during the day.

Did you know in India, even when it is over 30 degrees and they have no air con they still drink hot chai tea? This is because they believe it regulates your body temperature and makes you not feel the heat so much.

When I am working I drink green tea. When I am at home, usually with some biscuits, I drink black tea with milk. In the picture you can see my favourite type of tea, it is called Yorkshire Tea. I don't just like it because I am from Yorkshire though.... it is very strong and tastes yummy with milk.

You cannot buy Yorkshire tea in Japan. This was sent to me by a former Seiritsu International student Hernan. Thanks for making me feel at home, Hernan!

What tea do you like to drink? Do you drink it hot or cold?

Eiken award

We recently received an award from the Eiken foundation for the results we have been getting. We will be putting up in SGC in the near future.

More and more students are taking the test and at higher levels. It is excellent news for our students. It is all thanks to the hard work of our International team and the many English teachers who spent extra time working with the students to help them prepare for the tests. Thank you!

English Club is growing

As you can probably imagine, almost every school in Japan has some kind of English Conversation club. They have many different names and different purposes. Some are oriented towards speech contests, some are for daily conversation practice, while others are guided speaking practice sessions. Depending on the school and its atmosphere, the English club can be fairly large and active or - as is more often the case - a little more laid back and casual.

The English conversation club at Seiritsu is fairly laid back and casual but it is also quite active. There are many members who come out and enjoy their time with each other. And our membership numbers keep growing every year. In the current situation we are often trying to figure out ways to split the members up so they can enjoy their time and also stay safe.
