Are you ready for the rainy season?

Japan's rainy season starts in early summer, between May and July, depending on the region. The period is called Tsuyu (also pronounced baiyu) which translates to "plum rain" as the season coincides with the ripening of Japan's plums.

The wet weather is caused by cold winds from the north colliding wind warm southern winds which create several weeks of rain. The amount of rainfall varies dramatically from year to year. Some years are exceptionally wet whereas other years barely see any rain. This year looks to be wet so be prepared!

Scarlett visits the famous art islands of Okayama

During Golden Week, I got to visit an area of Japan that I have been wanting to travel to for some time. I visited the art islands, Naoshima and Teshima. These beautiful islands are just below Okayama prefecture, in Japan's Seto Inland Sea. To get there, I had to take the ferry from Uno Port.

On the islands, I visited many art exhibitions, ate local delicacies such as olive ice cream, and swam in the sea. I saw works from famous artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol and James Turrel.

If you enjoy art, stunning landscapes, and architecture you should visit this area.

Golden Week in China

Did you know not just Japan, but also China has Golden Week? Actually it has three Golden Weeks spread through out the year. This holidays were begun in the year 2000. One is called "Chunyun", and happens around the Chinese New Year, in January or February. Then there is the "Labor Day (May Day) Golden Week" which begins May 1st, and was reintroduced in 2019 after discontinuation in 2007. Last is the "National Day Golden Week" which begins around October 1st and may be seven or eight days long.

Art, sculpture and architecture at the NMWA

In the first weekend of May I made the trip over to Ueno Park to visit the recently reopened Museum of Western Art where they were holding an exhibition on Le Corbusier, the world-renowned French architect who designed the museum building.

This was only my second time visiting an art museum in Tokyo and this one was a unique one with a really impressive range of Western art from all over Europe and from a wide range of different time periods in art history. I loved seeing them all in a different context and it felt as though you could walk through European art history as you went from one exhibition space to the next.

As you walk through the museum and the grounds, there are also different sculptures by the French sculptor Rodin (who created the famous sculpture 'The Thinker'!). These were a particular highlight for me!

The exhibition on Le Corbusier displayed his original plans for the museum and explained that the museum had been closed since late 2020 to refurbish it so that it was returned to being closer to Le Corbusier's design. I was also able to see his paintings for the first time! They were all so different from his signature architectural designs and offered another perspective on the architect.

There's a lot to see and afterwards, you can enjoy some snacks while sitting in the park in the sunshine!

I would really recommend you go to check out the now-open National Museum of Western Art if you get the chance!

Kind regards, Olivia

Students bond while planting rice

1st year high school and junior high school students were able to have the annual Ta-ue (rice planting) outdoor activity. Ta-ue is the perfect activity to experience the spirit of cooperation. It is of course hard work, but it doesn't feel like hard work when you are acting as a team with all your classmates in the fresh mountain air. Later in the year the students and teachers will receive packs or rice as fruits of their labors that they can take home with them.
