Train delays
Train delays happen!
In a place where is public transportation plays such a vital role, and in Japan in particular (which is so organized and on time), having delays on the trains can be a major interruption.
As a result, the train companies actually give you little slips of paper to show that the train was delayed and to apologize for the delay.
In major cases - where a train is stopped for a while - there's another piece of paper that is usually used so you can take another train line or other buses to get to your destination.
Students need to present these slips of paper when they get to school to show that the train was delayed. Otherwise their tardiness is recorded on their school report cards.
